Najarah Rahaman takes early lead in competitive Girls’ U18

Young Najarah Rahaman shocked joint National Women’s champion and reigning U20 champion, Javanna Smith, in the first round of the what is arguably one of the strongest ever Girls’ U18 championship in T&T history.

Najarah v. Javanna

Najarah (left) played her usual English Opening (first move pawn to c4) against Javanna (right). The game was tense and went for well over 2 hours but in the end Najarah who got significant activity on the queenside, was able to secure her first ever win against the young Miss Smith. Meanwhile the other match up saw Nikeilia Chuniesingh taking a full point from Sadiqah Razark. The 4 girls, who will play each other twice in this tournament, give a good lesson to citizens of T&T in that they fight each other fiercely on the chess board but remain friends afterwards.

Tune in for more on Girls’ U18 which wraps up tomorrow.

Remember the U8, U10, U12, U14 & U16 start tomorrow in Presentation College, San Fernando.
