National Championships 2014: 1st Preliminaries (North)

1st qualifier 2014

The 1st National Qualifier (North) for 2014 was held on March 15, 16, 22 & 23 at St. Mary’s College, Port of Spain. The tournament was Super-strong with an average rating of almost 1900 (in spite of having one unrated player and one under 1500).

Joshua Johnson emerged as the winner on 5 points from 6 games, losing no games and drawing 2. Johnson worked hard for his win defeating the likes of Joseph Gill, Andrew Bowles and Ravishen Singh. Kevin Cupid, who also lost no games, came in 2nd edged only on tie-break. Cupid defeated Frank Yee and Leonard Duncan among others. Adrian Winter-Atwell (Alex) took the 3rd spot on tie break with 3.5 points; he also lost no game but had to settle for 5 draws and only 1 win, which was against Ravishen Singh. The prize for best junior was awarded to Mahendra Singh, brother of 2014 National Junior (U20) champion, Vishnu. Mahendra came in 6th overall due in no small part to his draws against Sears, Duncan and FM Frank Yee.

The top three, Johnson, Cupid & Winter-Atwell, will now wait on the results of the other 3 preliminaries to determine who they will play in this years National Championships carded for Sept 2014.
