Harper also defeated 2 Cuban International Masters. He finished 5th in the field of the 10 players in the Master class. Harper is already set to become the highest ranked player in the English speaking Caribbean, a place currently held by a Barbadian International Master, Kevin Denny. The Master Class was won by Thomas Willemze from the Netherlands.

In the Open Class section, Trinidad & Tobago’s Marcus Joseph emerged victorious in the 7-round Swiss tournament which fielded 61 players from countries within the region. Joseph finished on 6.5 points after ceding a half point from a draw with Surinamese, Gavin Ooft, who tied with him in first place. Joseph, however, won on the tie break. Frank Sears came in third place with a score of 6 points – losing only to compatriot, Marcus Joseph. Sears, who previously won the Caribbean Championship in 1972 and has served chess as a player and administrator, was recently bestowed the title of National Master by the local Chess Association. Right behind Sears, in fourth place, was our very promising Esan Wiltshire on 5 points.

President of the Chess Association, National Master Anderson Gordon, who has been following the tournament very keenly every day, believes this is the turning point for local chess. “Very soon we shall smash the glass ceiling that holds us back and a flood of players will become international masters, providing we keep working hard and providing we keep getting the much appreciated investment of resources and goodwill. In turn our growing chess community will make a positive and lasting mark on Trinidad.

Trinidad and Tobago Chess Association

For further information please feel free to contact:

Sonja Johnson
Public Relations Officer
Trinidad and Tobago Chess Association
e-mail: PRO@chesstt.org
Cell: 681 1151

MEDIA RELEASE November 25, 2013 Trinidad and Tobago Powers its Way to the Top of Surinamese Open Chess Tournament Trinidad & Tobago has powered its way to the top of the Surinamese Chess Tournaments which form part of the “Serfidensi Chess Celebration”, held in commemoration of Suriname’s Independence.
